You ought to spend at least 5 – 7 days in Hong Kong to experience this city never sleep. Since the city is so compact and its transportation is so efficient, you can see quite a bit of the city and its outlying islands in 5 days. The two main activities are sightseeing and tour during the day time, and shopping and dining out in the evening. The following are the top Hong Kong tourist attractions: Hong Kong Star Ferry: During the day time you can experience the green and white vessels cross the Victoria Harbour called – Star Ferry cost 22p (HKD2.50) and takes about 10 minutes. During the crossing, you can soak up the ambience of Victoria Harbour and view the various size and shape buildings between island of Hong Kong and Kowloon. You must try the crossing during the day time and evening time to enjoy the wonderful view. Another great way to relax and visit Hong Kong’s outlying island is take a ferry from the Central Ferry Piers, are by far the cheapest way to see Hong Kong’s harbour and most trips are less than an hour. Some ferry even offer an outside deck, so that you can watch Hong Kong flat past. In fact, part of the fun in visiting an outlying island is the ferry ride there and back. Victoria Peak: Victoria Peak is the tallest hill in the island of Hong Kong. At 392m (1,286 ft) which naturally makes it the best place for spectacular views of the city and the Victoria Harbour. From the Central District the Peak Tram Station located on Garden Road, which you can take the open top bus (15C) from Star Ferry to the tram terminal. The bus cost 35p (HKD4) or 10 minutes walk from Central’s MTR Station. The cost for the Peak Tram round trip £2.50 (HKD30). From the Peak, you can enjoy the skyline view of Hong Kong city and the harbour. A very modern Peak Tower, which designed looks like a Chinese cooking wok, and straight to the top Sky Terrace – extra cost £1.20 (HKD15) to the viewing desk, you will enjoy the most breathtaking 360 degree panoramas of Hong Kong Island and the South China Sea. The Peak Tower is home to plenty of Chinese, Western and Japanese Restaurants as well as fast food and shopping arcade. Also on the peak are Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, EA Experience and Peak Galleria. Riding a Tram: Like the Star Ferry cross the Victoria Harbour, the tram is the most colourful and cheapest way to see the Hong Kong Island. The tram is part of Hong Kong life dating from 1904. The old, narrow, double decker trains cut through the heart of the city from Kennedy Town west side of the city, across to Shau Kei Wan in the east. The cost for the tram ride to us is just less than 20p (HKD2.30)! Hong Kong Disneyland: Hong Kong Disneyland situated on Lantau Island just a 10 minutes ride from the airport. This is the second of the Disneyland venture and Tokyo was the first. The theme park is a smaller scale of Disneyland in California covering total 126 hectare (311 acre) of land. There are four Disney themed lands – Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland plus many other classic rides and attractions. Note that admission is higher during peak time including weekends, public holidays, summer school vacation (July/August) and the Golden Week holidays (May and October). You can purchase ticket at the gate or advance online or at the Hong Kong Disneyland Ticket Express counter at Hong Kong Station in Central. Ocean Park: Ocean Park is a combination of Marine Park and amusement centre, situated along a dramatic rocky coastline. The park has two areas: a lowland and a headland, which are connected by cable car. The main attraction in the lowland area is a pair of Pandas – An An and Jia Jia. Children also have a facility to swim with the Dolphin. From the lowland to headland via cable car take 8 minutes ride over a hill with great views of the coastline and the South China Sea. The headland area divided into several areas and attractions. Marine life section with wave cove with sea lions and an aquarium housing jellyfish, sharks, rays with great variety of 2,600 fish of 200 different species. The Ocean Theatre features shows by dolphins, sea lions and a killer whale. There are also have various of thrill rides includes a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, wet ride and a giant helium balloon ride. To do Ocean Park justice, plan on spending a minimum of 4 hours here, but with kids you’ll probably stay the whole day! Aberdeen: Aberdeen harbour is on the south shore of Hong Kong island, where all the Chinese Junks – The Tanka people live and shelter in the harbour and go to the open sea for their fishing. The ‘Jumbo’ floating seafood restaurant is one of the attraction and many tourists visited the area and sample the seafood there. Stanley Market: Situated on the eastside of Hong Kong Island with beautiful sandy beaches and modern bars and restaurants, is one of the must go places for tourists. There are plenty of little shops selling silk garments, sportswear, art, Chinese costume, jewellery and many other souvenirs. In summer, you can do your shopping in the area and also relax along the sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming. Temple Street: Temple Street is one of the popular tourists night out venue located between the area of Jordan and Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon. One of the busiest flea markets for food and cheap merchandise. This place also known as ‘Men’s Street’ because it is very popular for men’s clothing like T-Shirts, Jeans, Pants, Lighters, Shoes and other accessories. Nowadays you will also find clothing for women and children too. This place open from 4pm but usually come alive after sunset until midnight. Hawkers flog everything from bizarre patent medicines to counterfeit watches. Fortune-tellers cluster by the multi-story car park and China opera troupes busk for a few dollars in the open area. Lady Market: Evening shopping is a must in Hong Kong and popular for visitors is the ‘Lady Market’ in Mongkok, Kowloon area outside ‘Mongkok MTR’. The market area with more and more stalls now opens from 4 pm to midnight. There are countless stalls are selling clothing, watches, lighters, imitation designer handbags, sunglasses, sweaters, phone covers, Chinese souvenirs, CDs, and more. The name of the game is bartering; there is no fun without it. Most vender will inflate 100% to 150% depends on which country you are coming from! Lantau Island: Take a day trip to Lantau Island, one of the Hong Kong’s largest island and discover the golden sandy beaches, traditional fishing village and the Po Lin Monastery, the Giant Buddha Temple and the cable car over 5.5 kilometer journey offering the spectacular views of Lantau Island and the South China Sea. Macau: A day trip to Macau, previously as Portuguese colony and return to China since 1997, visit the historic church of St Paul, Macau;s World Heritage listed historic centre. With the reputation as Las Vegas of the Far East where plenty of Grand Casino gathering in Macau, there are plenty of day visitors there for culture experience and trying their luck!
