Chengdu is a famous historical and cultural city with a history over 3,000 years, located in the west plain in the Sichuan Basin as the capital of Sichuan Province. Chinese name as ‘Cendu’ and the city also known as the ‘Country of Heaven’ meaning the land of abundance. Chengdu is the birthplace of the first widely used paper money in the world from the Northern Song Dynasty around AD960.
As the provincial centre for politics, economy, culture, and transportation, its jurisdiction is over nine districts, four counties levelled cities and six counties. Chengdu boasts plentiful local products, a pleasant climate, a large number of scenic spots and historical sites, and fine traditional handicrafts well known both at home and abroad.
Giant Pandas is one of the China’s national treasures and Chengdu has established the world renowned breeding and research base for giant pandas. They have tens of hectares covering with bamboo groves and is the only base of its kind located in an urban area, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and the museum is open to the public throughout the year. This is the chance for visitors to have their close encounter with the giant panda and even take close up pictures next to the panda. Their panda breeding program are so successful and since January 2012, they begin to reintroduce captive bred panda into the semi wide environment in Dujiangyan, Chengdu and scientists believe that this reintroduction project will save the endangered giant panda in the years to come.
Chengdu offers many other attractions such as Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Wuhou Temple, Sanxingdui Museum, Huanglongxi Ancient Town and Dinosaur Museum in Zigong.
Chengdu weather is mostly mid and humid all year round and the distinctive characteristic of the city weather is foggy and humid. Most of the western tourist visited Chengdu will stay 1 or 2 nights within their China tour itineraries.
